Levels of Reporting

There is this tug of war between simplicity and complexity in Power BI reporting. On the one hand – you want it to be simple for the user, on the other – you want it to be flexible. The issue is that flexible reports are complex and not straight forward to use.

How do we come up with a solution that allows our users to have the best of both worlds? This is where it makes sense to have two different reports. One is a pretty straightforward report with numbers shown and guardrails in place so no confusion will happen. The other is more of analysis tool – this allows this extra layer of self-service. Our business users can get in there and ask questions why their numbers aren’t where they might expect them to be and dig deeper into why they are off.

It’s more of an art than a science when to split out reports into two different sections.
