How Low Can You Go?

Modeling data for a reporting project comes with all sorts of interesting decisions – one of which is how granular to make your fact tables.

In order to meet all the requirements, we need to make the data granular enough to make sure we can get down to a specific level. For example: if we save data at the month grain – we won’t be able to accurately report at the week level.

This is one thing we really need to get right the first time – if not, there is quite a bit of rework on the population, modeling, measure creation, and presentation layer. Spend some time learning not only today’s requirements but also what could be requested in the near future. Building a flexible data model is key to any successful reporting project. Always think “how low can we go?”
